Jumper Cables

If your Mercedes-Benz vehicle won’t start, there’s a chance that you need to jump-start the car battery, a jump-start car service, or something similar. At Mercedes-Benz of Centerville near Oakwood, we’ve created a guide on how to properly jump-start a car, so you don’t have to worry about contacting another service company like AAA.

If the car won’t jump-start, there’s a chance that the battery is nearing the end of its life, and our factory-trained technicians can handle replacing the battery for you. Feel free to contact our Springboro service center if you have any questions.

What Is The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car?

To learn how to properly jump-start another vehicle, you’ll need to follow the steps below. If you don’t feel comfortable, you can contact a jump-start car service like AAA.

  1. Have the car with the working battery park facing the other vehicle, then make sure that the vehicle is turned off and both parking brakes are engaged.
  2. Open both of the hoods and locate the batteries. You may have to remove a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
  3. Identify the positive and negative terminals. They should be clean and free of any corrosion.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoiling the battery cable, hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
  7. For the final clamp, connect it to an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
  8. Once everything is securely hooked up, start the engine of the car with the good battery first, then the one with the dead battery.
  9. Once you jump-start the dead vehicle, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order they were placed on, then shut off the car used to help jump-start the dead car.
  10. The engine should remain running on the restarted car for at least 10 minutes to ensure the weak battery doesn’t die again right away. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for more info on recommended times.

Additional Battery Tips and Tricks

If your car won’t jump-start, then it’s either time to replace the battery, or there’s a more serious issue. Take these steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. If there’s a clicking sound when trying to start the car, the starter may be the issue. Schedule a service appointment at Mercedes-Benz of Centerville near Kettering for a replacement.
  2. When the car’s electrical systems turn on, but the engine doesn’t turn over, there are several potential reasons like the ignition switch, battery, starter, or fuse. It’s recommended to bring your vehicle to our service center near Springboro so a factory-trained and certified technician can diagnose the issue.
  3. Remember to keep your spark plugs in working condition! Check out our spark plug guide here!
  4. Your car needs to remain running for a while after getting the jump to allow the battery to recharge fully after it’s been drained.
