History of Mercedes-Benz

History of Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is the oldest in the business. Today, the company is known for its state-of-the-art technologies and unparalleled refinement, offering unique designs and driving that’s more thrilling than ever before. Though the name Mercedes-Benz didn’t appear until 1926, the company has a long history as the first modern car brand.

The First Car

Widely recognized as the first gasoline powered automobile, the Benz Patent-Mortorwagen was created in 1885 at the workshop of Karl Benz. The small, three-wheeled open-carriage car had a meagre 2/3 horsepower, and it sold for roughly $150 (about $3,998 today). The wagon took a historic journey in 1888 when Bertha Benz, Karl’s wife, drove the Motorwagen to the cities of Heidelberg and Wiesloch—ostensibly performing the first long-distance road trip in history.

Starting the Company

The engineer Gottlieb Daimler worked with engineer Wilhelm Maybach to create the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1901 to sell cars, and the company’s most popular car, the “Mercedes,” was named after one of the founder’s daughters. By 1926, the first Mercedes-Benz cars were produced under the name “Daimler-Benz.” Building cars for the German people, both during and outside of the World Wars, the company quickly expanded to become a world-leader.

Associated Brands

The Daimler AG company owns several subsidiaries and has several alliances in the industry. For example, aside from the Mercedes-Benz cars division, the brand also owns the Smart cars brand. Mercedes-AMG® is the high-performance division of the company, producing track-ready vehicles, while Mercedes-Maybach—an ultra-luxury brand—was introduced in 2013.

Mercedes-Benz also has several firsts in the industry. Aside from having the first internal combustion engine, Mercedes was the first to have the honeycomb radiator that modern cars still have to this day. Mercedes also had the first modern chassis, the first four-wheel brake design, traction control, airbags, anti-lock brakes, seat belts with pre-tensioners, Brake Assist, and many of the driver assist technologies we find on cars today.

Mercedes-Benz is an unparalleled company. Since its inception, Mercedes has offered extensive options, impressive quality, and refined technologies. From the 1885 Motorwagen to the 2018 lineup, Mercedes has always raised the bar in the auto industry. Come test drive one of these luxurious vehicles today at Mercedes-Benz of Centerville and feel the difference.
